Research reveals Oscar winning actresses more likely to get divorced

New research has shown that high-profile, Oscar winning actresses are more likely to end up divorced than their fellow nominees.

Researchers from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University have studied over 751 Oscar nominees between 1936 and 2010 and have discovered that the marriages of “Best Actress” winners have been significantly shorter than those of their fellow nominees or those of the male winners.

Sixty percent of married female Oscar winners have gotten divorced since 1936. The average marriage of the winners lasted 4.3 years, as opposed to an average of 9.5 years for actresses that were nominated but lost. There was not much difference among male Oscar nominees and winners, whose marriages both lasted around 12 years.

Even in the 1930s and 1940s, when divorces were not as common, the research showed that Best Actress winners have always been plagued with high divorce rates.

The researchers evaluated the age of the winning actresses, who tended to be younger when they won the Oscars as opposed to their male counterparts, as well as whether their husbands were also famous or wealthy.

It appears that the more successful an actress is, the more their marriages appear to suffer. Regardless of whether the woman’s profession is in acting, business, education or other, high-powered women tend to enter into conflicts with their spouses, especially if they have better jobs and earn a larger income than them.

Often, what happens in a marriage where the woman is the primary earner is that roles are reversed, and not all men are willing to do that. The couple then enters into conflicts, leading eventually to divorce.

Once couples make the decision to divorce, especially when you have a high-income family, such as with the Best Actress winners, it’s important to hire a top divorce lawyer to ensure that the process runs smoothly and to maintain the peace between parties. Too many times, what at first began as a neutral divorce can turn sour. Divorce attorneys are here to mediate the situation and make sure everyone receives their fair share.

Divorce lawyers help divide property, assets and debt and also help when it comes to alimony, child support and child custody arrangements. Even with pre-nuptial agreements, couples can still battle over money and who will have custody of the children. Without a divorce attorney, the process can take months or even years to resolve, but with the assistance of an elite paralegal, everything from documentation to court appearances will be handled swiftly.
